Basic information about holidays in the UK
Basic information about holidays in the UK

There are a lot of opportunities and purposes for travelling, you may travel with your school (travel and tourism BTEC), with your family and friends or to run your business. Moreover, in order to have this opportunity, a lot of details should be covered.

For refugees

Anyone recognized as a refugee is entitled to a travel document issued in accordance with the Convention. If you have asylum in the UK, you can apply for a Convention Travel Document. UK Border Patrol will issue you with this travel document unless there are overriding reasons (eg to protect national security), which they did not in this case. When you apply, you must prove that you are a refugee and legally resident in the UK. The application date must be within the last six months of your approved stay in the country. If you are not a citizen of a country, you can apply for a document issued to a stateless person. If you are classified as stateless under the 1954 UN Convention Relating to the Status of Stateless Persons, you can apply for special travel documents for stateless persons. These rules are set by the United Nations. According to the convention, a person is considered stateless if the person is not recognized as a citizen of that country under the laws of that country.

For not British Citizens

People who are not British citizens but are currently in the country can apply for a document (known as IS137) which gives them the right to travel. Single-use travel documents, also known as IS137, are only valid for travel outside the UK. You cannot use it to return to the UK. If you are not a British citizen but a citizen of another country, you can apply for a one-way exit document. This type of document is called a one-way exit visa. Even if your home country refuses to issue you a passport, you can still leave the country if you have a so-called "travel document". Even if you are not granted refugee status or declared stateless, you can still apply for a travel permit that allows you to leave the UK and live in the UK again. This option may be right for you. Before you can apply for a passport from another country, you must first be able to prove that you have been wrongfully refused a passport in your home country. Once you've chosen the type of travel document you need, we can help you with the application process.

Visa for travelling

Most of these travel documents require you to be a legal resident of the UK and have a visa or permit that allows you to stay in the country for at least six months from the date you apply for the document. The Ministry of the Interior started issuing biometric travel documents on March 17, 2008, but all previously issued passports and visas remain valid until their expiration date. Biometric passports have a new design and enhanced security features such as a biometric chip that cannot be copied. In addition, biometric passports are more difficult to forge. The microchip contains the personal data of the owner specified on page 31 of the document (name, nationality, gender, place of birth and date of birth and signature). The device itself has no other data that could identify you. A digital copy of the applicant's photograph is used as the "biometric" template for the application.

Why people travel?
Why people travel?

What are the goals of a person who travels? Why do we take holidays every year and go to warm countries or ski resorts? Maybe it's just a habit instilled in us by our environment, or maybe it's a conscious choice that leads to necessarily exploring the world, but investment in travel excellent. There are many reasons why people go travelling.

a traveller in time

You are tired of work and want to relax. Most people plan their holidays with this in mind. It doesn't matter where they go as long as they don't have to see their workplace. After all, a change of environment is the best vacation and it's a great opportunity for the brain to start thinking in a different plane or not thinking at all and enjoy the ocean outside the window. And afterward, you can fall in love with your job again. There's something to that.

The love of planning. Everyone has a different hobby in life. Some have it collecting postcards, magnets or sugar sticks. And some collect travels and mark or erase them on a travel map. Whether it's a grueling hike through the mountains or a peaceful train journey reading a book or playing at top blackjack sites, this feeling of exploration can be a transformative experience many people love.

Connecting with people. What can be more interesting than making new friends? And while traveling it turns out a lot easier and more interesting, because people are in a relaxed state and open to communication. Informal conversations, shared interests, and you already have a friend in another country. And when you gather dozens of them, you realize that the world is not that big and you can really see it all.

Learning about other religions. It is not uncommon to hear that a person goes on a journey because they are interested in other peoples' views, traditions and beliefs. On such a journey you can finally find yourself and find answers to questions that interest you, if you have not been able to do so before.

Problem-solving. If you have a mountain of unresolved issues, take off on your journey. In just a few days, you can clear your mind of pesky thoughts, and the solution will come to you. It's much more effective than thinking for 24 hours non-stop. Check it out, then share your experience.

Photography. The love for visualizing the world draws travelers to the places where hundreds of people have been or where no one has gone before. The main goal pursued becomes to take a photo from an angle that others haven't found yet. And think of it as the best because you found it.

Learning foreign languages. The best way to learn is through practice, namely by communicating with the original speaker of the foreign language. To do this, people go to countries where their native language is least spoken and immerse themselves in the local abbreviations and accents. It's exhilarating; it feels like one more moment and the language will become one's own.

Getting to know yourself and the people closest to you. If you want to get to know someone really well, go on a trip with them. The same principle works for a solo trip. When you have an inner dialogue with yourself, and then it stops, and at that moment you discover another truth. Don't be afraid to learn the truth about those you are about to entrust your life to, go on a holiday with him.

Love to travel. Everyone has a different hobby in life. Some have it collecting postcards, magnets or sugar sticks. And some collect travels and mark or erase them on a travel map.

Traveling is a lifestyle. These are people who can't sit inside four walls. They need air, roads, mountains, other cities otherwise they will lose the meaning of their existence. It is a disease, it cannot be cured and undoubtedly is pleasant, but not approved by everybody. Not everyone is prepared to spend their time in this way.

UK Culture and Lifestyle Native to the Country
UK Culture and Lifestyle Native to the Country

Historically Christian religious life, its interaction with the cultures of Europe, the traditions of England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland, and the impact of the British Empire are some of the factors that have contributed to the formation of the UK Culture and Lifestyle.

Other factors that have had an effect on British culture include: Although there is such a thing as "British culture," the cultures of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland are distinct from one another and share varying degrees of similarities while also retaining their own identities to varying degrees.

Language

The English language was first used in early medieval England, and now it serves as the de facto official language of the United Kingdom. An estimated 95% of the population of the United Kingdom is monolingual in the English language. In addition to English and Welsh, the British government officially recognizes seven more languages.

The Welsh Language Act of 1993 and the Government of Wales Act of 1998 both stipulate that the Welsh and English languages should be treated equally in the public sector, to the extent that this is both reasonable and practicable.

Regional Accents British History

There is a significant amount of linguistic diversity not only across the four countries that make up the United Kingdom but also within each of those countries itself. This is due, in part, to the lengthy process of immigration that has taken place in the UK; for instance, Northern English dialects have adopted a great number of words with roots in Old Norse.

It is common knowledge that the United Kingdom is home to a wide variety of regional dialects and accents, even in close proximity to one another. For instance, despite the fact that Liverpool and Manchester are only 35 miles (56 kilometers) apart, the Scouse and Mancunian accents of the two cities are very different from one another. There are several examples of dialect English in published works of literature, such as "Literature".

Arts in British Society

World War ii
Arts in British Society

The literary traditions of England, Scotland, and Wales were passed down to the United Kingdom as an inheritance. These include the works of English authors Geoffrey Chaucer and William Shakespeare, as well as works written in Scotland, such as John Barbour's The Brus.

Other examples include Norse literature that influenced Old English literature, Arthurian literature with Welsh roots, Old English literature influenced by Norse mythology, and Old English literature written in Old English british tradition royal family.

Theatre

Since the country's founding in 1707, the United Kingdom has been home to a thriving theatrical heritage, the majority of which can be traced back to England, Scotland, and Wales. The Union of the Crowns occurred at the same time as the collapse of highbrow and confrontational Restoration comedy in favor of emotional comedy, home tragedy such as George Lillo's The London Merchant (1731), and an overwhelming interest in Italian opera. These trends all occurred simultaneously, british isles british food.

It was around this time that fair-booth burlesque and mixed forms, which are the predecessors of the English music hall, were extremely popular forms of entertainment, making them more prominent than they had ever been before. Other types of English drama, on the other hand, went through a protracted period of decline as these forms flourished and gained popularity.

In Scotland, on the other hand, the opposite took place, and particularly Scottish plays, such as those written by Douglas and John Home, came into existence. The early part of the twentieth century was dominated by drawing-room plays written by authors such as Noel Coward, british traditions british architecture.

Music

Classical music[edit]The Grenadier Guardsband is currently performing "The British Grenadiers" at the battle of the ceremony of Trooping the color. The band was established in 1685, and it has since been performing at various British ceremonial events.

Continental fashions had a significant impact on the development of British baroque music. This is demonstrated by George Frideric Handel, a naturalized British citizen who was born in Germany and whose choral music influenced the taste of the British public for the subsequent two centuries. Additionally, as a result of his operas, Britain was able to compete with Italy as a center for the creation of opera. The Birmingham Triennial Music Festival was established in 1784 and ran continuously until 1912, making it the classical music festival that lasted the longest until it was discontinued. This festival was responsible for bringing a lot of attention to classical music, british people in cultural differences.

In addition to this, the founding of the London Philharmonic Society in 1813, the Royal Academy of Music in 1822, and the Irish Academy of Music in 1848 were all significant events that contributed to the professionalization of British classical music and the patronage of composers. The Philharmonic Society was a fervent admirer of the early Romantic composer Felix Mendelssohn, who was also a significant impact on the music of Britain. Mendelssohn was born in Germany.

British Culture and Northern Ireland

John Field, a composer from Ireland, is credited with inventing the nocturne and may have been an inspiration for Chopin and Liszt. The revival of operas performed in the English language and the founding of eminent orchestras were two noteworthy developments that occurred during the middle to late stages of the nineteenth century.

The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic was founded in 1840, and the Manchester-based Hallé orchestra was founded in 1858. The Scottish Orchestra was founded in 1891, and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1920. At the turn of the century, the nationalistic trend that had been developing in classical music was the most prominent trend that emerged in the genre. This was first exhibited in works like as, which recreated an Elizabethan masque, but it gradually adopted a more pastoral tone as a result of the impact of The Masque at Kenilworth.

There are many different styles that might be classified as modern or contemporary classical music. Composers such as Benjamin Britten developed distinctive and avant-garde styles, whereas composers like as William Walton produced more conventional ceremonial and patriotic music. Benjamin Britten was one of the most influential composers of the 20th century. Opera North was founded in 1977 with the intention of redressing the imbalance of operatic institutions that were located in London, british music.

The BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Philharmonia are only two of the prominent orchestras that are currently based in the United Kingdom. There are a number of festivals that focus on classical music, such as Aldeburgh and Glyndebourne, but the BBC Proms remain the most significant annual event in the classical music world..

What to take with you on your trip
What to take with you on your trip

The clothes, medicines and even food you take with you on your trip depend on how you travel. For example, when travelling by train you don't need to take three bags of food, as the dining car is compulsory, (this only applies to long distance or international trips or as a day trip to Bangor). If you are travelling by bus, you should have sandwiches and water in your bag - this will suffice for 100% until your next stop.

Preparing

To avoid having to pack bags in a hurry, you should pack for the trip in advance, which means that the first stage is preparatory. Task #1 in it is to make that precious list of items. It is best to spend 1-2 days on the list, adding to a personal register everything that comes to mind. Unnecessary items can then be crossed out.

At the preparatory stage you have to solve other issues - visas, insurance, study of customs of the country you are going to. It doesn't matter if you are travelling on a business trip or on a holiday with children; accommodation and food have to be arranged locally, the route from the airport, train or bus station to the hotel has to be planned. Dealing with these points, you can move on to the most important thing - writing a list of items and collecting suitcases. What should you pack?

Documents and money for expenses

Money and a full list of documents are the essentials. Make sure you have them handy, not at the bottom of your suitcase. It is better to pack them in a small bag, which is always on your shoulder - it is a good guarantee against loss or theft.

So, you'll need them on the road:

-a passport. Going on a trip within Ukraine your internal passport is enough, for international travel a foreign one is required. As insurance be sure to make several copies, you can phone or e-mail them electronically. Those travelling with children should bring their birth certificates. For travelling abroad with only one parent to the list of documents the notarised consent of the other parent to cross the border is usually added.

-Tickets. You need them if travelling by plane, bus or train. Most transport companies sell tickets online. You do not even have to print them out - just open the ticket on your smartphone.

-Money. Cash and/or bank cards. Be sure to check whether the card will be active abroad. The second option is to change the currency, which is not always convenient in the case of large sums.

In addition, it is advisable to put in your wallet your hotel reservation and insurance card, and if you travel by car, your driving license, vehicle registration certificate, vehicle inspection ticket, and car insurance policy. You should also have some cash for running costs, a notebook and a pen.

What to bring in a first-aid kit: essential medication

Having your own first-aid kit in your valise will help you feel at ease anywhere in the world: from a small village in the mountains to a sandy beach at the seaside. Assemble a list of medicines must be responsible, so as not to forget anything, because the urgent need to buy medicine abroad is not always possible (or there is no pharmacy, or medicine is issued only on prescription).

Since 1952 (the earliest date for which comparable figures are available), the United Kingdom saw a growth of car use, which increased its modal share, while the use of buses declined, and railway use has grown more slowly.[2][3] However, since the 1990s, rail has started increasing its modal share at the expense of cars, increasing from 5% to 10% of passenger-kilometres travelled in east London through tram systems.

By 2015 83% of distance travelled was by car or taxi; with 5% being by bus and 10% by rail. Air, pedal cycle and motorcycle accounted for roughly 1% each. In terms of passenger-kilometres, slightly over 662 billion were made by cars, motorcycles vans and taxis, 78 billion by rail, 39 billion by bus, 5 billion by pedal cycle and 9 billion on domestic air flights.

Passenger transport has grown in recent years. Figures from the DfT show that total passenger travel inside the United Kingdom has risen from 403 billion passenger kilometres in 1970 to 793 billion in 2015 bus operators busiest airports.

Transport Infrastructure in Rail Network

Freight transport has undergone similar changes, increasing in volume and shifting from railways onto the road. In 1953 89 billion tonne kilometres of goods were moved, with rail accounting for 42%, road 36% and water 22%. By 2010 the volume of freight moved had more than doubled to 222 billion tonne kilometres, of which 9% was moved by rail, 19% by water, 5% by pipeline and 68% by road. Despite the growth in tonne kilometres, the environmental external costs of trucks and lorries in the UK have reportedly decreased.

Air travel in Urban areas

Between 1990 and 2000, there has been a move to heavier goods vehicles due to major changes in the haulage industry including a shift in sales to larger articulated vehicles. A larger than average fleet turnover has ensured a swift introduction of new and cleaner vehicles in the UK.

Although the decline in railway use led to a reduction in the length of the rail network, the length of the road network has not increased in proportion to the increase in road use. Whereas the rail network has halved from 19,471 mi (31,336 km) in 1950 to 10,014 mi (16,116 km) today, Department for Transport stated that traffic congestion is one of the most serious transport problems facing the United Kingdom. According to the government-sponsored.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions

A critical issue for the transport sector is its contribution to climate change emissions. Transport became the largest sector of greenhouse gas emissions in 2016. Since 1990 carbon dioxide emissions from transport in the UK have reduced by just 4% compared with an economy-wide reduction of 43%.

Rail Transport

The rail network in the United Kingdom consists of two independent parts, that of Northern Ireland and that of Great Britain. Since 1994, the latter has been connected to mainland Europe via the Channel Tunnel. The network of Northern Ireland is connected to that of the Republic of Ireland. The National Rail network of 10,072 miles (16,209 km) in Great Britain and 189 route miles (303 route km) in Northern Ireland carries 1.7 billion passengers and 110 million tonnes of freight annually. Urban rail networks are also well developed in London and several other cities. There were once over 30,000 miles (48,000 km) of rail network in the UK; however, most of this was reduced over a time period from 1955 to 1975, much of it after a report by a government advisor․

Great Britain

The rail network in Great Britain is the oldest such network in the world. The system consists of five high-speed main lines (the West Coast, East Coast, Midland, Great Western and Great Eastern), which radiate from London to the rest of the country, augmented by regional rail lines and dense commuter networks within the major cities. High Speed 1 is operationally separate from the rest of the network, and is built to the same standard as the TGV system in France.

The world's first passenger railway running on steam was the Stockton and Darlington Railway, opened on 27 September 1825. Just under five years later the world's first intercity railway was the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, designed by George Stephenson and opened by the Prime Minister, the Duke of Wellington on 15 September 1830. The network grew rapidly as a patchwork of literally hundreds of separate companies during the Victorian era, which eventually was consolidated into just four by 1922, as the boom in railways ended and they began to lose money. Eventually, the entire system came under state control in 1948, under the British Transport Commission's Railway Executive.

In 1994 and 1995, British Rail was split into infrastructure, maintenance, rolling stock, passenger and freight companies, which were privatized from 1996 to 1997. The privatization has delivered very mixed results, with healthy passenger growth, mass refurbishment of infrastructure, investment in new rolling stock, and safety improvements being offset by concerns over network capacity and the overall cost to the taxpayer, which has increased due to growth in passenger numbers. It has also led to some confusion as to who looks after different aspects of the rail service among the general public.

In Britain, the infrastructure (track, stations, depots and signalling chiefly) is owned and maintained by Network Rail, a not-for-profit company. Network Rail replaced Railtrack, which became bankrupt in 2002 following the Hatfield rail crash in 2000. Passenger services are operated by train-operating companies (TOCs), which are franchises awarded by the Department for Transport (in England), Transport Scotland, and Transport for Wales. Examples include Avanti West Coast and East Midlands Railway.

High Speed 2 is critical for the UK's low carbon transport future. HS2 is a new high speed railway linking up London, the Midlands, the North and Scotland serving over 25 stations, including eight of Britain's 10 largest cities and connecting around 30 million.[17]Network Rail are considering reopening a railway in south-west England connecting Tavistock to Okehampton and Exeter as an alternative to the coastal mainline which was damaged at Dawlish by coastal storms in February 2014, causing widespread disruption.

To cope with increasing passenger numbers, there is a large ongoing programme of upgrades to the network, including Thameslink, Crossrail, electrification of lines, in-cab signalling, new inter-city trains and a new high-speed line. Great British Railways is a planned state-owned public body that will oversee rail transport in Great Britain from 2023. The Office of Rail and Road is responsible for the economic and safety regulation of the UK's railways.

Edinburgh Castle: History of the Castle
Edinburgh Castle: History of the Castle

One of the oldest fortified places in Europe is the Edinburgh Castle. With a long rich history as a royal residence, military garrison, prison and fortress, it is alive with many exciting tales. When you climb Castle Hill, you will walk in the footsteps of soldiers, kings and queens – and even the odd pirate or two.

Though parts of it remain in military use, the castle is now a world-famous visitor attraction. It's also an iconic part of the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh World Heritage Site, such as National War Museum.

Ancient Stronghold

Set upon its mighty rock, Edinburgh Castle's strategic advantage is clear. Seeing the site's military potential, Iron Age people built a hill fort on the rock. Early medieval poetry tells of a war band that feasted here for a year before riding to their deaths in battle. As well as guarding great moments in history, the castle has suffered many sieges, such as castle rock royal edinburgh military tattoo.

During the Wars of Independence it changed hands many times. In 1314, the Scots retook the castle from the English in a daring night raid led by Thomas Randolph, nephew of Robert the Bruce. The castle defences have evolved over hundreds of years.

Mons Meg, one of the greatest medieval cannons ever made, was given to King James II in 1457. The Half Moon Battery, built in the aftermath of the Lang Siege of 1573, was armed for 200 years by bronze guns known as the Seven Sisters. Six more guns defend the Argyle Battery, with its open outlook to the north.

Did you know ?

The castle is the most besieged place in Britain. In 1639 the castle was captured in just 30 minutes, taken by Covenanter forces led by the distinguished General Alexander Leslie.

A Jacobite force failed to capture the castle during the Rising of 1715 thanks to poor planning. The ladder they brought to scale the ramparts turned out to be too short in Edinburgh's world heritage site for royal mile.

Edinburgh Castle was home to kings and queens for many centuries. Queen Margaret (who was later made a saint) died here in 1093. The chapel built in her honor by her son, King David I, is Edinburgh's oldest building. St Margaret's Chapel still hosts weddings and christenings today. The Great Hall, completed in 1511 for King James IV, hosted grand banquets and state events. But the king had little time to enjoy his new addition. James IV died at the Battle of Flodden in 1513, fighting English forces sent by his brother-in-law, King Henry VIII of England, such as experience Edinburgh castle.

Above the door to the Royal Palace are the gilded initials MAH – for Mary Queen of Scots and her second husband Henry Stewart, Lord Darnley. Mary gave birth to James VI in the Royal Palace in 1566. He became king of Scotland at 13 months old and united the crowns of Scotland and England in 1603.The Honors of Scotland are the oldest Crown jewels in Britain.

Made of gold, silver and precious gems, they were created in Scotland and Italy during the reigns of James IV and James V. The crown, scepter and sword of state were first used together for the coronation of a monarch in 1543, when Mary Queen of Scots came to the throne. The iconic Stone of Destiny, used for centuries to inaugurate monarchs, is also on display in the Crown Room.

Did you know ?

In the Second World War, the Crown of Scotland was hidden from the enemy in David's Tower – buried in a medieval latrine closet. (That's a loo, to me and you!)

The first fireworks display in Scotland took place at Edinburgh Castle. In 1507 fireworks formed part of a spectacular jousting tournament hosted by James IV.

The castle was once a royal treasury, where the nation's records and riches were kept. Jewels and treasures from around the world were kept here – including relics of Robert the Bruce, fine tapestries, and magical amulets.

Military Garrison in Royal palace

Following the ‘Union of the Crowns' of 1603, Edinburgh Castle was rarely visited by the reigning monarch, but from the 1650s it grew into a significant military base. Defences were rebuilt and enhanced in response to the Jacobite Risings of 1689–1746. New gun batteries such as Dury's Battery were constructed and new barracks such as the Queen Anne Building were added to house the many soldiers and officers. Some 600 troops were housed in the New Barracks, built during the Napoleonic Wars with France. It's still in use by the military today.

Regiments often had a mascot, many of whom were dogs – some of them are laid to rest in the Dog Cemetery, along with other canine companions. But soldiers once brought home a far more unusual four-legged friend to live in the castle stables. (Clue: He also had a trunk.)Not everyone who came to the castle enjoyed their stay.

Even royals were sometimes known to complain about the draughts. But life was truly grim for many of the prisoners who were locked up in the vaults below Crown Square. As a formidable stronghold, the castle was the most secure lock-up in Scotland. Between 1757 and 1814 the vaults became home to many hundreds of prisoners of war.
